Talking Hostel Assistant needed for summer season

HI-Harpers Ferry is a 35 bed seasonal hostel that overlooks the Potomac River and the Appalachian Trail. If you like hiking, cycling, water sports or history, this is the place to be in the summertime! The hostel is operated by the Potomac Area Council of Hostelling International, USA.

Responsibilities:
• Welcome, register, orient and supervise guests and groups
• Represent Hostelling International-U.S.A. and the hostel in a positive
manner to guests and visitors
• Provide information about HI-USA, the hostel and the local area
(particularly the Appalachian Trail) to guests in person, over the phone,
e-mails and in writing.
• Consistently clean hostel buildings thoroughly and efficiently
• Collect and accurately record overnight fees, answer phones, take
reservations
• Provide on-call/overnight assistance two or three nights per week
• Set up and deliver weekly events and programs
• Additional duties include: building maintenance, reservations, gardening,
and other tasks as assigned by manager

Desired Qualifications:
• Must have customer service experience and LOVE working with the
public
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience handling cash, credit cards and recording sales transactions.
• Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis.
• Demonstrate ability to work effectively without immediate supervision
• Must be flexible regarding work schedule: working evenings, early
mornings, overnight on-call duty, holidays, and weekends as required.
• First aid and CPR certification preferred (training can be provided).
• Computer skills (word processing, e-mail, ASSD or hospitality registration
and data base management)
• Interest in camping, hiking, cycling, or hostelling
• Knowledge of the Appalachian Trail and C & O Tow Path
• Live/Work experience preferred
• Must have reliable transportation

Reports to: Hostel Manager

Salary, Benefits and Hours:
This is a live-in position offering 40 hours/week at a seasonal hostel from May 24 through September 10, 2010. Wages start at $8/hr and include housing.
