    Default Bunk Bed supplier

Not sure where to post this so i'll start here.

Anyone have a great bunk bed supplier that has bunks with curtains and possibly lights built into them?

Apparently no one manufactures such things in the states and we'd like to do better than Ikea bunk beds.

While on the topic of Ikea, has anyone got a track record with their bunk beds. We just installed a few but i'm not sure how durable they will be. Anyone?

The IKEA bunks are very cheap and I see them everywhere in hostels. They seem to have one problem: I have seen a lot of broken upper bed guard-rails. Apparently this happens when a heavy person tries to pull himself up too fast. The result is that this person makes a hard landing on his butt.

We are using wooden bunks, but I have just ordered two steelpipe bunks there: http://www.sleeptite.ie/

Unfortunately no pictures on this website, but they´ll send you plenty. The beds are pricey (compared to IKEA) but obviously much more robust and a lot nicer too.

If you don´t like their design or have ideas how to improve it, they´ll co-operate with you and build for you what ever you want.

They have built these for St Christopher´s in Paris:

There you have your curtains and reading lights!

I have complaints of the current model, called MYDAL. Those are just small pieces of wood glued together, which can't stand uneven pressure.

The previous model they made (TORDAL?) was pretty reliable, (plain wood, not bits) we had no problem with it since the past 5 years, only needs some varnish for protection and to keep it clean.

I don't really like metal beds because they creak and boing, while wood absorbs the noise. I guess next time we'll make custom built wooden bunks and probably rip off the plans from Ikea...

I was talking about the IKEA steel pipe bunk bed:

We only get the double beds from IKEA (Dalselv):

It´s not a superb bed but so cheap you can´t complain when it falls apart after two years..

I don't know the model name of the bunk beds that we bought from Ikea and I don't see them on their website, but they're cheap steel units that I would never buy again. My big problem with them is that the top bunk is too low and the guests cannot sit up in the bottom bunk. Instead they have to hunch over in an awkeward uncomfortable position. I get a lot of complaints about them.

I wonder if everyone submitted ideas for an ideal bunk bed design if we could submit the plans to Ikea (or another company) and see if they'll build it. There's a huge worldwide market for hostel bunk beds.

    E.g.,
    • metal frame (?)
    • sit up on lower bunk
    • guard rail on top bunk
    • curtain track

If they're considering the most frequent suggestions, throw in:
    • alarm clock/glasses shelf
    • mounted reading lamps
    • built-in power point for each bunk (maybe with a 10-foot cord coming out of one leg to plug it into the wall)
    • padding where the ladder attaches to avoid squeeking

we've been buying tromsö bunks from ikea recently, seem a damn site stronger than the other ikea ones ive encountered - but they are new, so its not really fair to compare them too much.
