I really like Youth Hostel Plakias in Crete. Quiet village, great management, hiking, snorkeling...

I also enjoyed my stays at Point Loma Hostel in San Diego...

Any reason's why you liked those hostels so much Red Moon?

For me Nathan's Villa in Krakow and Warsaw. Brilliant staff, great social areas, always clean,modern bathrooms/kitchen etc,brightly coloured throughout, free washing, internet etc.. I believe they've added a bar in the Krakow hostel and they offer pub crawls and trivia nights as well..

I see these hostels as a benchmark for all hostels and a plan for mine..

This is great. Once we have a good-sized list of "best hostels" here, I'll compile everyone's favorite hostels into the Hostel Showcase.

Thanks for mentioning that hostel in Sevilla. I might move to Sevilla next year and might need a place to stay to scout things out. Last time I was there the hostels weren't great. I'm going to book the Oasis...

A honourable mention for the High Street Hostel of Edinburgh. It was the first hostel where I ever stayed, back in 1991. Apparently it still exists and, judging from the reviews on the web, itīs still quite good. Applause!

The best hostels I've stayed in are as follows;

Majdas Rooms in Mostar, Bosnia & Herzigovina - run by a very warm family who simply can't do enough for you in providing great hospitality over and above what you come to expect from a youth hostel.

Rambutan in Granada, Spain - had great times here with some friends many years ago, the view from the hostel is special and the food you can buy is really good, chilled out place with good people passing through.

Tirana Backpacker Hostel in Tirana, Albania - really laid back, sociable hostel, the guys that run it are top and they are open to letting you hang out with them and their friends in experiencing the culture.

Kosmonaut in Lviv, Ukraine - I just found this to have a good hostel ethos, it's kind of living roomy and like being in a friend's flat but still with all the amenities you would find in a hostel. Great location too.

Mama's hostel in Krakow, Poland - for similar reasons to Kosmonaut
