Post List of Hostel Chains Worldwide

This thread is an attempt to list hostel chains worldwide (or at least any hostel with two or more locations).

I think it would be an interesting list. If you add to the list please note any hostel chains that are owned by hotel chains and put the number of hostels in parenthesis.

I'll start a brief list that can be expanded. There might be too many to list all of them, but when the list is large enough I will compile it into one document sorted by country.
  • Jazz Hostels, USA (6 hostels)
  • USA Hostels (4 hostels)
  • Green Tortoise, Seattle and San Francisco, USA (2 hostels)
  • Floyd's Hostel & Fort Lauderdale Beach Hostel, Florida, USA (2 hostels)
  • Nomads World, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji (9 hostels?)
  • Base Backpackers, New Zealand & Australia (11 hostels?)
  • Wombats, Germany, Austria (4 hostels?)
  • Hostels Oasis, Spain and Portugal (3 hostels)
  • Home Hostels, Spain (3 hostels?)
  • Flying Pig Hostels, Netherlands (3 hostels)

The following chains exist in UK.

St Christophers (8 hostels)
Globetrotter (London, Edinburgh)
Oxford BP and Bath BP
MacBackpackers (8)
Gatliff Trust (4, Outer Hebrides)

Chains of 2 or more hostels within one city:
Astors (about 6 hostels, London)
Smart (3, London)
Journeys (3, London)
Birmingham BP (2)
Brodies (2, Edinburgh)
Hoppo (2, Edinburgh)
A set of 3 (Cowgate in Edinbugh + 2)
Elenydd Trust (2 hostels, mid-Wales)

Uncertain:
Generator (London, do they have one in Berlin also?)
Wake Up (London known, any others?)
Euro Hostel (Glasgow known, any others?)

Thanks for adding those.

I just looked up Generator and Wake Up Hostels. Generator has two (London, Berlin). Euro Hostel has 3 (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle)

Are you talking about "Smart City Hostel" in Edinburgh? They have 3 in London already??? Or is that a different thing?

Thanks for the additions...

I just looked up Smart Hostels and they have 3 hostels in London:
  • Hyde Park Inn
  • Hyde Park View
  • Camden Inn

I've been trying to find the original press release, but isn't Smart City Hostels owned by a large European hotel chain?

I´ll talk to one of the dudes in 2 weeks (he´ll be staying with us - I wonder what´s his business in Vienna!? )

By the way: I heard the Generator hostels have just been bought by someone with shitloads of money. I would appreciate some information on that...

Smart: It's a different company. They have Hyde Park View, Hyde Park Inn and Camden. I'm not very impressed with them: poor common facilities, all common areas have a TV.

Meininger: When I first looked at them for London they mentioned only private rooms, so I didnt put them on my site; but now I see they have dorms, some at a good price.

There is some info here, but it might be outdated. MBI MBO Ltd also own Hostelbookers.

“Blade runner meets Lonely Planet”, LOL!

No, that´s outdated. Hostelbookers and Generater is NOT under the same umbrella any more - that´s why Generator is back on Hostelworld.com.

santa - hows the one in berlin coming along? its near the st christophers isnt it? i had a little poke around the site a month or so ago, couldnt see much.

i gotta say though, im surprised berlin can sustain so many large hostels, i mean there are heaps. i know the real estate is a bargain but hostel rates seem to be cheaper there than anywhere else in western europe - must be a pretty tight market?
