    Default Hostel Stories

When you work at hostels you see a lot of interesting things

This forum is a place where you can post funny, strange, weird, or otherwise interesting stories about working at or living in hostels.

(Please don't use people's real names if you are going to write something embarrasing about them.)

When I was working in Vilnius Old Town Hostel several years back, there was one night when this Alaskan guy probably in his 50s came to visit. At first he seemed normal, friendly and chatty, but the following night he got wasted on Vodka and sat on the stairs at the entrance singing Beetles songs and trying to explain to me that he was Jesus, and he was terrified of being crucified. Anyway, he deteriorated enormously as the night went on, started crying and wailing at the top of his voice in the middle of the courtyard. I had to come back from a night club when the receptionist on duty phoned me, very worried, and told me to remove him. So, I had to remove him from the hostel and took him to a hotel by the bus station, much to the delight of the receptionist there.
I really felt quite sorry for him, he was clearly missing a couple of screws. ;/

This is the locatition of our hostel in relation to the railway station (Westbahnhof)

Easy to find, one would think. Yet, people have strange questions. Someone emailed us this a few days ago:

    Hello,
I'm wondering how to get to and from the Westbahnhof and your hostel (The Lounge), because the directions say to go two blocks. Is this possible when walking with luggage and to cross the Mariahilfer Strasse? (Are there sidewalks and places to cross the street?)
Thank you very much for your help!

I'm sure many hostel stories begin with that line

Are there sidewalks and places to cross the street?
I wonder what they were thinking...

She, not "they". It was a girl from Minnesota. She arrived here well. Are there no sidewalks in Minnesota?

She likely doesn't know how far a block is. Distances between 2 streets are highly variable if you don't live in a city.

    Amusing none the less.

My evening staff last night was asked a very serious question last night by a potential walk in, "do you have a one bed dorm available?" My staff asked if it is was one bed in a dorm to clarify if it was a 6 bed or a 4 bed dorm that they wanted and the question was asked again "no, I mean a one bed dorm?" He chose not to stay when given the option of a private room which he thought was too much.

Arriving to the hostel I work at one morning, I saw five French men enter the showers,... which has only three showers. And just a few minutes later you could hear them singing in chorus throughout the whole hostel. It was a pretty great way to wake up.
