Default Re: Key Cards vs. Metal Keys

Small rural hostels generally don't take as many security measures as big hostels and they usually don't need to. Often people visiting rural hostels are travelling by car so they have somewhere safe to lock their valuables.

As far as our ratings are concerned. Travellers will compare your hostel with other hostels in the same area and if security is important to them (if they're travelling by public transport and they have a computer or expensive camera with them) then they may choose the higher rated hostel.

It is not a big deal though, as travellers expect that a rural hostel in Shetland doesn't need to take the same security precautions as a hostel in New York City.

Also the security rating only accounts for 10% of the overall rating. In the past we have awarded an overall rating of 4 stars to hostels that score 0 stars for security.
