Default Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" Release Date and Alpha Download

The next release of Ubuntu Linux is going to be called "Karmic Koala". Here is a list of features to look forward to:
    http://pinstack.blogspot.com/2009/06...in-ubuntu.html

One big change is that Empathy will be the new chat program (instead of Pidgin). Empathy supports audio and video chat.

Here's the full release schedule for Karmic Koala -- October 29th, 2009 is the planned date of the final release.

The alpha version is available for download here.

Is anyone here using the 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope release? I'm still on 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

Update: I just installed Jaunty Jackalope last night on my old laptop and it looks great.

This video demo is a little over the top, but shows some of the crazy desktop effects possible:
(These effects are turned off by default, except for some of the transparency.)

I installed Jaunty on one of my public access machines. Unfortunately even with the desktop effects turned off it's too slow on that machine really (Celeron 2.4Ghz, 512Mb). I'lll be sticking with Xubuntu for now. I use 8.04, as it's the Long term Suuport edition, so I won't have to change it for a while. I also found Amorok more flakey on Jaunty. Hardy works fine, and is very stable - much better than windows in my opinion. Obvioiusly might be different if you're wanting to run a lot of windows software, but for an internet termintal it's great, and no problem with license fees to MS!

I've seen Ubuntu running in a few hostels and guests don't seem to notice the difference.

I think Karmic Koala is going to be a Long Term Support edition -- should be good.

Looks great !!! Super cool !

Love Snow Leopard with Parallels® Desktop (2-3 operating systems in the same time). The cube desktop offered from Parallels® is cool as well !

Parallels looks great. You can run multiple operating systems on Linux and Windows too with Virtualbox.

If you're just running a browser then there is no difference. It is much more secure than windows too if people do get into the OS, as most of them wouldn't know what to do, and you need admin password to effect any system changes. I was disappointed with the guest account thing on Jaunty -- it was the reason i was trying it, but it seems you can only use it if you're already logged in as a user. I wanted it to boot straight into the guest. I also have found it impossible to get the computer to shut down aster some period of inactivity - that's a feature I'd like. At the moment it just goes into standby, and there are some problems when it resumes.

Personally I'm not really that interested in desktop effects - even for my own PC, I use them for a while, but soon tire of them.
