ICANN is about to let people register new top-level domains. A
top level domain (TLD) is the last part of a domain name like .com or .net.
That means someone could even create a TLD called
.hostel or
.hostels and let people register domain names like
london.hostel or
london.hostels.
"What we're effectively doing is opening up huge amounts of online real estate," ICANN president and CEO Paul Twomey told the Wall Street Journal before the vote took place.
The only drawbacks are that it costs up to $500,000 to get started, and Web users may not be able to remember all the new domain extensions. ICANN will make some money though.
